Super Dog Day 2012
Willowbridge shopping centre dedicated the month of October to the dogs, by empowering our furry friends we held a Super Dog Day on the 27th of October 2012 on our greenbelt area behind the centre.
Throughout the month of October donations of dog food, blankets and money were received in abundance. We collected 300 varied dog food items and 100 doggy blankets, which were divided up and donated to our charities PETS and The Animal Anti Cruelty League. Over R2300 was collected and sponsored to The South African Guide Dog Association.
At the Family Fun Walk a wide variety of dogs took part and had a wonderful time determined to finish the race with wagging tails.
The Dog Box Project was a huge success. Teams of 2 participants entered the project and had the chance to sand down, varnish and decorate already built kennels. A total of 40 kennels decorated on the day. A bag of dog food and a blanket was added and the kennels were donated to charities in under privileged areas.
The Dog Shows provided a lot of fun for all in the audience and The Cape Province Dog Club and the Incredible Dog Show left us all wanting more. The Guide Dog Association did an educational demonstration on how these specific dogs are trained to assist the blind.
Thank you to everyone that part took and to those who donated as well as making the day such a huge success.
We look forward to our next Super Dog Day

The 5 Cent piece comes alive at Willowbridge Centre
The initiative of the 5 cent campaign came about due to the 5c coin being discontinued; Willowbridge approached Stop Hunger Now SA. 40 five cents pieces will give 1 child a meal. And as they say in the classics ‘The rest is history’ with R72 455 raised for this event.
Money boxes were placed at every pay station in the centre. In the first 2 weeks an amount of R5 000 was realised. This was more than was anticipated. It was then extended for an extra month. To date the amount R72 455 has been raised and banked 40 000 meals to be packed. Schools were invited to collect 5 cent pieces and the school who collected the most will win a R5 000 book voucher. The closing date for the competition was 25 April 2012. The local radio station Radio Tygerberg board-casted live from the centre.
The winning school was Bellpark Primary who weighed in with 176kg of 5 cent pieces. They received a Book voucher to the value of R5 000.
There is still more good news....
On hearing what transpired at Willowbridge the Book Supplier donated another R3 000 to the school Blue Downs Primary who came second with 173kg of 5 cent pieces. This school will for the first time have their own Library.

Food Handout Day - 20 June 2012
Stop Hunger Now SA works with the Department of Social Development and other NGO's to determine which daycare centres are most in need. To ensure that Stop Hunger create a handup and not a handout, any daycare centre we feed enters into an agreement with us to use money they would have spent on food to upgrade the daycare and train teachers. Stop Hunger monitor the progress of the centre monthly.
Radio Tygerberg, Willowbridge and Stop Hunger went to 3 daycare centres in Cross roads to handout some of the food parcels and experienced the living conditions of these children. The food handout at these 3 daycare centres is just a drop in the bucket with lots of food to be handed out. To see the smiles on the little ones faces was a priceless moment and worth every little cent.
Thank you to everyone who has helped to make this initiative a huge success.
AND YOU THOUGHT YOUR 5 CENT PIECE HAD NO VALUE.

Spur High Schools MTB League - Chris Willemse track at Willowbridge
In spite of cold and wet weather conditions, more than 170 mountain bike riders took to the track for the first round of the 2012 Spur High School Mountain Bike League in the Western Cape on Saturday, 9 June at Willowbridge Mall.
With this being the first time that the League has used this venue and a first for most of the cyclists visiting the venue, it couldn’t have been a better place to kick off the League!
According to race co-ordinator Meurant Botha, the great turnout for the first race of the season is a clear indication that the league is achieving its goal of a bigger footprint for mountain biking as a sport at school level.
“The League was launched in 2009 and has shown tremendous growth with more than 2300 riders taking to the tracks in 2011 compared to only 887 riders in the first year. We’re expecting a bumper 2012 season with 43 events to be hosted in nine regions across the country as well as across the borders in Lesotho, Namibia and now also Zimbabwe over the next five months,” said Botha.
“By promoting existing events and facilitating new events in as many locations as possible, we are making participation easy and accessible. The League gives high school pupils the chance to represent their schools in cycling in the same way as they do with the more traditional team sports. It also provides an annual showcase for promising, young talent,” mentions Botha.
Riders gave it their all to secure top scores on the log and a steady start to the season. Paul Roos Gymnasium – who finished top of the log in 2011 as well as Parel Vallei and Montana showed excellent early season form.
The Sub-Junior Boys (13–14) division was won by Andrew Sparks of Reddam House followed by David Botha of Paarl Gymnasium second and Matthew Keyser of Parel Vallei in third.
Competition was fierce in the Youth Boys (15-16) category, but Ivan Venter of Parel Vallei took line honours with Stephan Senekal of Paul Roos Gymnasium second and Stefan De Bod of Montana in third. No newcomer to the podium Stephan Senekal comfortably outrode 80 riders after a fall in the first round to win the 2011 Youth Boys Category.
The Junior Men (17-18) category was won by Paul Rodenbach of Parel Vallei with Martin Freyer of Waldorf Constantia second and Jannes Buijs of Paul Roos Gymnasium in third.
Montana High School made their mark in Sub Junior girls with Jeanni Viljoen taking first and teammate Nicome Bosman second.
The Junior Women first place went to Marie-Christin Kempf of Parel Vallei with Michaele van der Heever of La Rochelle second and Corrie Keyser Hermanus High third.
After the first round Paul Roos is leading overall in the Boys division, while Montana is leading in both the Mixed and Girls categories.
All in all it was a fantastic day out for riders and spectators alike.
Amarider would like to thank Willowbridge and Chris Willemse Cycles for hosting this fantastic event!
